"The Story of a Shield" by Michael Zerjadtke

Please join us on February 12th, 3:30 - 6:00 pm, for the Ross Family Lecture "The Story of Shield" by Michael Zerjadtke.

The large round shield was the defining element of the heavily armed Greek soldier. An extraordinary find illustrates the complex construction of these shields. They were masterpieces of geometric design and practical woodworking. Yet despite their complexity, many shields were mass-produced in factories that employed more than 100 slave laborers. The sources tell us that the production of shields, and perhaps other military equipment, was very profitable, and we can even determine how much money was made from their production.

The Ross Family Lecture will take place in the Auditorium of the Harrison Institute, in the Special Collections Library, with a reception to follow. Food and drinks will be provided.
