Biography

I study slavery and race in American history. At the University of Virginia, I was honored to lead both the UVA President’s Commissions on Slavery and the University (PCSU) and the University in the Age of Segregation (PCUAS). I co-founded and continue to develop the Jefferson's University-The Early Life digital humanities project.  I currently lead a research project in the Provost's Office continuing to research the stories of those enslaved at UVA, working directly with the DEC-UVA, and managing the Universities Studying Slavery consortium of of schools. My publications include Freedom Has a Face: Race, Identity, and Community in Jefferson’s Virginia (2012), the President’s Commission on Slavery and the University 2018 Report, essays in Educated in Tyranny: Slavery at Thomas Jefferson’s University (2019), and After Emancipation: Racism and Resistance at the University of Virginia (2024).
