Careers
Graduate training provides a path to many careers in higher education and beyond. In light of significant changes within the academic job market, reductions in tenure-track positions and PhDs cohorts, and the consequent diversification of PhD career outcomes, we are currently conducting a new study to update our quantitative and qualitative data about UVA History graduates.
Our preliminary data indicates that approximately 30% of our doctoral graduates since 2015 hold tenure-track faculty positions. Percentages for the years 2008-15 are slightly higher, but they reflect a marked shift from prior decades in which the majority of our doctorates went on to tenure-track positions. These changes are consistent with national trends in higher education.
A fully updated picture of faculty placements and career outcomes at UVA History will be published here in the coming months. In the meantime, visit this link for more about our prior placement studies.
