My general research interests primarily focus on the cultural history of modern Europe with special attention to the German speaking parts of the continent. I am also interested in national identities and the history of the international system. In my dissertation, “Emotional States,” I explore ideas of marital happiness in East and West Germany from the end of WWII to the fall of the Berlin Wall. In it, I ask how values, traditions, and identities that people in a divided Germany attached to the institution of marriage changed overtime and why these changes took place.
