The Age of Jefferson and Jackson

Nicholas Wood

This course covers the period from the American Revolution into the 1840s, giving special attention to roles and legacies of Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson in shaping American politics and culture.  There will be three class meetings per week, two of which will be dominated by lecture and one focused on discussion of reading assignments.  The average reading load will be 150-250 pages per week.  Students are required to submit discussion questions each week based on the readings, and write four reading response essays (500-750 words) during the course of the semester.  There will be a midterm exam, and a longer essay (1500-2000 words) in place of a final exam.
