Backstory Internship Opportunity

**INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY**

BackStory w/ the American History Guys

 Description:
BackStory with the American History Guys, the Charlottesville-based public radio program and podcast, is looking for an intern to assist with production of the show during the spring 2011 academic term. The internship is unpaid, and though some remote work is possible, the majority of the internship will take place on the premises of BackStory HQ (located in the Boar’s Head Inn complex on Ivy Rd.). We intend to be as flexible as possible with scheduling, but interns will be expected to devote 4-12 hours per week to the program.

The ideal candidate will be either a history major or have an active interest in the field of history. We’re looking for someone with excellent research, writing, and organizational skills, and at least some familiarity with social media. Digital multi-media production experience is a plus, but not required. Last but not least, we’re looking for someone who is excited by the mission of making academic material relevant and accessible to the public-at-large.

The intern will assist with a wide range of production tasks, including research, interview preparation, and website maintenance. He/she will also be called upon to help build the program’s social media presence. Other duties may include outreach and marketing of finished show episodes, as well as general administrative support. The intern can expect to receive basic training in the use of Pro Tools (the industry standard for digital audio editing), and learn the fundamentals of recording studio engineering. Self-starters who display an interest in and facility for field reporting may also have the opportunity to report, voice, and produce stand-alone segments for the radio show.

 Background:
BackStory with the American History Guys is a American history-themed public radio show that seeks to bring historical perspective to today’s news. It is co-hosted by renowned U.S. historians Peter Onuf (18th Century Guy), Ed Ayers (19th Century Guy), and Brian Balogh (20th Century Guy). On each episode, the History Guys pick a topic from the contemporary world and explore its historical context. Over the course of the hour, they are joined by fellow scholars, newsmakers, and callers with questions about that week’s topic. To date, BackStory has been broadcast by more than 100 public radio stations around the country. To read more about the program and explore our archive of past shows, visit www.backstoryradio.org.
